How media influences public opinion

May 9, 2019 · I examine how social media manifests as public opinion in the news and how these practices shape journalistic routines. I draw from a content analysis of news stories about the 2016 US election, as well as interviews with journalists, to shed light on evolving practices that inform the use of social media to represent public opinion.

Government. As the impeachment process rolls on through the House of Representatives, polls find that most Americans’ views on the matter remain largely unchanged. Public opinion on impeaching and removing President Trump has been holding steady since early November, with approximately 47% of Americans in support of impeachment and 44% opposed.The experiments reveal source familiarity plays a large role in news choice, with people far less willing to select coverage from unfamiliar media than from sources with which they are familiar. Conditional on exposure, however, the experiment shows unfamiliar local and foreign media sources can influence public opinion.
