It has M & W turbo that is running around 120 hp. It use to pull a 12 row planter with 400 gallon of fluid for 15 years and then just bare planter for 5 years.The early 4520's had air cleaner problems and serious injector problems but that was staightened out early. The 4520 was the first J.D. with a turbo charger. J.D. built the 4020 and needed a bigger tractor so they built the 4520 in 1969 and 1970 they turbocharged the 404 and made other improvements to handle the extra horsepower.

Oh yah, stuck centrifugal weights is a problem. Makes for really hard cranking when they are stuck advanced or the springs have rusted off. I have a John Deere 4020 Diesel that developed a miss. The first step to cure miss was to remove the pencil injectors and have them tested. All cracked/popped adequately, however, 2 of the injectors test pattern was not real good if pressure was added slowly so I replaced them. This did not cure the miss. Feb 14, 2021. #1. Directly behind the oil pressure gauge is a small hole in the governor housing. Oil will go through that hole and run down a trough to the oil tube. Remove the oil pressure gauge and take a small stiff piece of wire and you can unclog the hole. I had the same issue with a 37 A. It takes some. patience but it can be done. Some have been converted to 12 volt negative ground that is a lot simpler and easier to diagnose electrical problems on.A, 1965 cockshutt 40, I have a 4020 that ran really well up until November. It starts good , but idles rough and when you put it under load it stalls. If you pull the choke out it will come back to life and run OK. if you feather the choke back in, it will drive around OK in lower gear. Always runs rough and always stalls out under load.1. The white wire spade was broken off from behind the switch. 2. Checked my wires for voltage with the key off- The blue, and brown are hot 12v's. I have a grey wire that is dim hot with my test light - meter showed 2v's. This is his question: "I replaced the load control shaft and seals at the bottom of the transmission. I put the load control level in "D" before this. I also put new oil in it. After doing some more checking, it became obvious that there still had to be a resistor in the circuit of the generator light.4020 starting problems. My '64 4020, has issues with not turning over fast enough to start. Reasonably new starter, new batteries 550 cca, new cable clamps. Had a mech. look at it, and came down to ground strap corrosion. Installed new ground strap, (24v pos. ground system) connected right to diff bolt, after filing to clean metal.
The check valve in the early 4020 was at the transmission pump and is prone to failure to cause loss of all hydraulics with the clutch pushed in on the SR tractors. The side console 4020 moved that check valve up front and up top so if it leaks it doesn't drain the cooler/reservoir.
