The Serial # 514970 is on the butt. On the top of the barrel is stamped: "Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass. USA PAT’D MAY 11 1880 JAN 03 1882 APRIL 09 1889”. It is a .38 Military & Police, Model 1905, 4th Change, round butt revolver made around 1916. At the time S&W marketed the round butts as 1902's. So, Fran is correct. The holster looks like it was made for the 1917 revolver or the 1911 semi-auto. Your #2 is a British Service Revolver from WWII and was made in 1943.

Jun 17, 2018 · Welcome to the forum! Concur it's an M&P 1905 4th Change. The S&W Standard Catalog puts the serials 241704-700000 between 1915 and 1942. Not a lot of help. They weren't made at an even x-number per year, so extrapolating your serial in that range isn't going to be exact. If the production was relatively linear then I'd guess 1928- ish.
