In truth we got about 40.The 383 is meant to be a higher compression engine, using either the 5.7" or 6.0" rods. 400 uses a 5.5" rod. The less oversquare you have in an engine, the more torque that's produced. (Oversquare is bore vs. stroker, for instance 4.030 x 3.750 (383) vs 4.125 x 3.750 (400) vs 4.000 x 4.380 (350), etc) 400 heads also have steam holes in between ...A 4.030 bore 350 block will give you 383 with a 3.75" stroke crank. The SBC 400 has a much larger BBC sized bore of 4.125" so it is bigger and better than the smaller bore motor (it has a bigger crank journal as well as being designed from the ground up for a 3.75" stroke).

I have standard dished pistons in a GM crate 350, so it limited the compression ratio I could achieve.
