Sponge fossils

Jul 18, 2018 · The occurrence of the earliest freshwater sponge fossil spicule is dated to the Permo-Carboniferous and constitutes the first and only known fossil record of freshwater sponges from the Paleozoic. The radiation of recent freshwater sponges, however, is dated as much younger in both of our analyses (18.0-28.3 Ma, Paleogene, Table 1 , node A).

Paco Cardenas a sponge expert at Swedenꞌs Uppsala University, who, like the others scientists, was not part of the original research, said the timing was "stunning." "To have discovered sponge fossils from close to 900 million years ago will greatly improve our understanding of early animal evolution," he said. jc/rt (AFP, AP)Fossils are rare today, but you can make them in your own home! Dimensions: 4 x 3.5 cm. by Science Source Images.Data from exceptionally preserved fossils are required to resolve the evolution of spicules and the aquiferous system. Articulated sponge fossils preserving soft tissues, such as those in the Burgess Shale and Chengjiang biotas (e.g. [10,11]), typically lack fine detail and internal morphology. The data available, however, provide clear ...The incongruence between sponge phylogeny and stratigraphy can be used to evaluate the quality of the sponge fossil record and to estimate the minimum implied gaps (MIGs)—minimum fossil gaps or range extension required for the congruence between stratigraphic and phylogenetic data (cf. Benton and Storrs, 1996, Benton et al., 2000).

The sponge fossils preserve remarkable details including carbonaceous preservation of soft tissues and axial filaments of spicules, but the taphonomy of the deposit has not previously been documented in detail. This paper documents the complex taphonomic processes responsible for preservation of sponges in the Anji Biota. The …Hunan. China. Dubbed the “sponge loop”, this hypothesis helps explain how carbon is cycled on coral reef ecosystems, with sponges playing a central role in ...The earliest unequivocal sponge spicules have been from the lowest skeletal fossil horizon in Mongolia of Late Ediacaran age, dated at 543 to 549 Ma . In Wengan and adjacent parts of central Guizhou, late Proterozoic sedimentary rocks are represented by the Nantuo, Doushantuo, and Dengyin formations ( 14 ).

In certain other cases of sponge fossils that lack microscleres (e.g., Botting and Muir, 2013), skeletal preservation is sufficiently fine that microscleres can be reliably assumed to have been originally absent. The skeletons of these early sponges collapsed once the soft tissues decayed, or were at least compressed, resulting in superposition of …Sponges, due to their position in the metazoan tree, are a good candidate for the earliest fossil evidence for the diversification of animals. Nevertheless, the ...…

Feb 23, 1999 · Fossils called Titusvillia drakei, believed to be glass sponges from about 300 million years ago, were found near Titusville, Pa., in the early 1900s. Around the same time, glass sponge-like fossils labeled Protoarmstrongia ithacensis were found in an rock quarry near Ithaca; these were dated to the Devonian period, about 365 million years ago ... Perhaps the most common sponge fossils found in Kentucky are the stromatoporoids, or stroms for short. Stroms are calcareous sponges that form mounds 2 to 3 feet across on the seafloor. Stroms still exist today in moderately deep water. Ordovician fossil stromatoporoids can be seen along roadcuts in the Blue Grass Region, especially near ...
