Shale mineralogy

Jun 3, 2015 · Rock formations of pure clay minerals are rare. More typically, several species of clay mineral are associated together with clay-sized and silt-sized quartz, mica, and other rock grains. This association is known widely as "shale." In sandstone reservoirs, clay-mineral content typically ranges from 0 to approximately 10% BV. .

Typically, the Marcellus shale is laminated (fissile) and lacks bioturbation. According to previous studies the chief minerals are 9% - 35% mixed-layer clays (more abundant in upper member); 10% - 60% quartz, 0% - 10% feldspar, 5% - 13% pyrite (more common toward the base of the formation), 3% - 48% calcite,New fossils from the black shale of the Niutitang Formation (basal Stage 3 of Cambrian) in Hunan Province of China, reveal for the first time an articulated body of the sponge Hyalosinica archaica Mehl & Reitner in Steiner et al., 1993, which possesses an ovoid main body and an impressive long stalk.Organic-rich shale and associated fine-grained sedimentary rocks of marine-continental transitional facies were well developed in the Upper Carboniferous Keluke Formation in the Eastern Qaidam Basin, which is expected to be a set of potential shale gas exploration and development target. Mineralogy and pore structure of marine-continental transitional shale were investigated systematically ...
