Rune mage tree can definitely be it's own damage tree. You will want to get any source of ethereal damage buffs because rune mage's most powerful damage spells (runic trap and runic great blade) use ethereal damage. Runic trap is especially strong for its impact damage. Prep the green rune, then run in front of an enemy and place the red rune. Reply. lotofdots. •. Some mage builds do benefit from Levant, a few from Blue Chamber, but most of them go either Monsoon or Sorobor. Really depends on what kind of mage you're doing. If all sigils, then it's often Levant and sometimes Sorobor, if lightning or decay or ethereal then usually Monsoon, if mostly hex then Sorobor or rarely Levant ... Outward is mainly about exploring, which involves A LOT of running. I personally find myself most of the time running than fighting, and the +10% speed and -40% stamina consumption are invaluable to me. The Hex Mage skill tree is also great, although I don't find it to be as necessary as others.
Hex mage is really fun. For breakthrough skills i recommend Speedster uses a little of Stamina, while Hex Mage uses mostly Mana and hotkey slots. Torment can capitalize on Confusion and Pain, dealt with Probe. Torment and, in minor measure depending on the build, Rupture, can make use of the Cooldown Reduction.
