It pains me to say this, because I'm a huge Savage fan, but I'd choose the Ruger American out of those two. The trigger on the Axis is horrible (the Axis II acc-trigger is much better), the bolt handle feels cheap, the stock is extra flimsy and cheap feeling, etc. The rifles shoot, but they are just very cheap feeling overall. Have 2 of them, and they can't be beat for the price imo. Other features include: A 20inch med weight 1/10 twist bbl. I don't have any experience with the Ruger but my Savage Axis 2 with the hardwood stock in 22-250 shoots good. I've killed prairie dogs and jackrabbits out to 400 yards with it. My buddy has the one with the synthetic stock in .223 and it shoots good.
