The engine serial number should be stamped on top of the water pump. If not, it will be stamped on an oval pad behind the oil filter (passanger side at the top front of the block). As I understand it, the band IS there to cover the end of the slot, which acts as a breather hole for the steering gear. The band is to prevent dirt from falling directly into the hole. The only lights on the CJ2A dash are the high beam tell tale and the instrument light, AFAIK. Walck's fuel gauge has a hole in the back that a lamp holder snaps into. The lamp holder is too small for the hole. Fabricate or find/buy a mount, Then you will have to create a steering shaft from the Box to the original column that will have to be cut down and adapted to mate up with the new shaft. At least one if not two universal joints will be required to do this. Often the inner windshield frame at the bottom is toast. The body is pretty dang solid except for the usual. Hat channels are toast, passenger floorboard is "bubba" replaced. Toolbox is gone. I use 5W-30 in winter, and 20-50 in summer. I do use single weight non-detergent oils in small air-cooled engines - but I stick with the multivis for all my water-cooled applications.
The best recommendation now is multi purpose chassis grease as seen on later lubrication charts. Clean out the old stuff and fill with chassis grease to the plug level. The most important thing is to know the differences using the NGLI rating. IF you use a chassis grease ensure it is 0 or 1.Trying to introduce my 1949 CJ3A to the forum.
