Since there is zero oil pressure the force of the valve spring will collapse the lifter and bleed the oil out. EVERYONE that has bought one will tell you that it is the cat’s nuts way to adjust SBC hydraulic lifters. I stock the tall version of an Adjust-A-Cover and it costs $35 plus shipping. the MOST SIMPLE way to adjust valves on the SBC/350 chevy or any other hydraulic lifter engine This could be because of wear issues, wrong oil, high mileage etc.etc. Lets set your rockers. Note we will NOT be running the motor for the initial setup. (1) Pull the rocker covers. (2) Remove Sparkplugs. (3) Rotate motor in normal direction to TDC (not backwards at anytime)Turn the engine till the exhaust starts to open and adjust the intake rocker. Than turn the engine clockwise till the intake valve starts to close and adjust the exhaust rocker. Do it like you said. For hydraulic, you are right - tighten to 0 clearance as indicated by lifting the rocker up and down at the valve, until movement stops, then go another 1/4 to 1/2 turn. 1/2 turn is recommmnded for low perf and stock rebuilds.
