P0420 indicates a problem with the cat or the 2nd HO2 sensor. If you haven't replaced the sensor, do that first since the sensor is much cheaper than a new cat. I have a few thoughts! If the ECU was not reset fully after the O2 sensor and cat replacement, it will hang on to stored values and could be contributing to your issue. There are two ways I like to reset an ECU: quick and dirty, or an overnight sit.The P0420 code indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has identified a decline in the efficiency of the catalytic converter on Bank 1. Aug 18, 2023 · Code P0420 Description. The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses sensors mounted in front of and behind the Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) to monitor its efficiency. The first sensor, the air-fuel ratio sensor, sends pre-catalyst information to the ECM. The second sensor, the heated oxygen sensor, sends post-catalyst information to the ECM.
