Somewhere on this site I posted a blury pic of my DSA aluminum lower showing the wear on the recoil plate after about 1500 rounds. I run mine without a shock buffer, and the wear was trivial. All of the dimensions on the weapon are called out in inch measurements. The magazines don't readily and reliably interchange between the two.

The lower receiver doesn't bear too much stress, serving mainly to contain the fire control group and a place to mount the buttstock, pistol grip and rear sight, so steel's strength isn't needed, like it is on the upper receiver.
