Strimtom's hardcore season 1, 2 and 3 builds are easy to achieve, high survivability, decent new player starting builds that require no tomes. Some involve race/class/universal tree unlocks but a fair bit don't. I would say new players go look there instead of other places. Reducing your 'grazing profile' from 2-5 down to 2-3 is going to be a similar damage increase, though not quite as high.
