it's because you used the save file that already had the maximum hearts/stamina. there is probably a separate value in the files that disables upgrading completely once you reached the maximum. just make a fresh save file and edit that instead. or just use the editor to manually give you the upgrade. I emphasize Starting File because Monsters rank up further in Master Mode, so you wouldn't want to take a late Master Mode Save and copy it into your Normal Mode Save. once you got the game installed, you can rightclick on it in the list and navigate directly to the save folder. that's where you drop your old save files. the playtime counter is just a number in the settings.xml file. best thing would be to just manually edit that file on the fresh install. simply copying the old file over can cause issues.
